The new Toronto South Detention Centre will be built on a site that has been in continuous use since 1880 as a correctional center. As such, it will combine the old with the new to obtain the highest of security standards and provide safety and security to the public. The first phase is a 320 bed facility serving weekend intermittent sentences, opening December 9, 2011. The second phase is a 1,650 bed facility serving remanded and sentenced inmates, expected to open late 2013. This facility will offer many special programs for inmates, “including a mental health assessment unit, special needs unit and aboriginal programming unit.” This building is designed to modernize correctional services in Toronto and provide inmates with “safe, secure and humane conditions” while in custody. The building is currently applying for LEED Silver certification. The architect is Zeidler Partnership Architects and the Mechanical Consultant is SMITH + ANDERSEN Consulting Engineers.
