Sinclair Secondary School & Education Centre is a joint facility and is part of the Durham District Board of Education located in Whitby, Ontario. Originally built in 1992 the facility is 355,000 square feet; the high school portion serves 1700 students. The facility originally utilized two conventional centrifugal chillers in a serving both facilities. The Board elected to replace the chillers with two R134a magnetically levitated bearing machines and installing a primary secondary loop allowing each facility to optimizes its chilled water supply which was enhanced by the superior capacity control of the magnetic bearing machines and their class leading energy performance. The School board installed a Karma certified metering system and has utilized real electrical usage savings data to earn a utility grant of $56,000.00 per chiller.
