In response to the growing population in Gatineau’s L’Ange-Gardien area, the need for a new elementary school, École des Grands-Pins, became evident.
The project’s inception coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting a focus on indoor air quality. The Ministry of Health and Education emphasized increasing air changes per hour which became a crucial element in the overall design. Given the Outaouais region’s commitment to geothermal energy in schools, HTS adopted an innovative approach. By utilizing Aermec 6-pipe heat recovery heat pumps (model NXP), HTS successfully addressed the large reheat load associated with a constant air volume design with high air changes per hour and tied into the geothermal wells. This decision was complemented by Jaga low-temperature convectors, achieving exceptional heating output with low-temperature hot water.
This collaborative effort, driven by innovative design, has not only provided an inspiring learning environment but also pushed the boundaries of energy-efficient school design in alignment with Ministry mandates.
